West Gate Tunnel Project Structural Steel Installation

Key Capabilities

  • 300T + of steel installation

  • Installation Methodology

  • Access Optimisation

  • Project Management

Overview

The West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) in Melbourne is part of Victoria's’ Big Build that will upgrade the West Gate Freeway and link to CityLink at Docklands via a tunnel beneath Yarraville.

The WGTP includes:

•upgrade of West Gate Freeway by two lanes in each direction

•twin tunnels under Yarraville,

•ventilation structures at each exit,

•a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River, plus

•14km of new cycling and walking paths.

Scope

Vecta have been engaged to provide skilled and experienced personnel for the installation of 300T+ steelwork associated with the electrical, instrumentation, signalling and HVAC services of the tunnel sections of the Project.

Process

The structural steelwork installation forms a crucial part of building construction and involves several key steps to ensure that steel structures are correctly and safely assembled. Here’s an overview of the process:

Document Control: With attention to detail and utilisation of proprietary systems, latest drawings were able to be accessed and expedited

Planning: With Vecta’s early  involvement and industrial experience,  the Constructability methodology was optimised prior to works commencement

Logistics:  With site areas at a premium, the delivery location and timing were integral to effective use of resources

Interfaces: With significant works being undertaken concurrently and in the confined locations, SIMOPs methodologies were employed to maximise tool time

Quality: With Vecta’s inspection of the incoming steelwork and fasteners through to the methodical installation procedures; stringent QA requirements were assuredDue to the criticality of the foam suppression system in a MHF, the scheduling of works including tie-ins were meticulously planned and executed to ensure mitigation of outage durations;

Outcomes

Safety: With Vecta’s focus on ensuring personnel training and competencies matched the intended tasks and the use of rigorous safety procedures and processes, an excellent safety record for the project was achieved

Works Continuity: The extensive HR effort from employment through employee wellbeing underpinned an interruption-free delivery of the works

Cost Certainty: Vecta provided a fully costed solution for the works with ongoing and current cost reporting that exceeded Client requirements.
